Taster Day - Hadlow Campus

Designed to give you a chance to experience one of our further education courses and gain expert advice on how to pursue a career in the land-based sector. Taster courses are open to students aged 14 and over, and run between 9:00am - 12:00pm and/or 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Please choose one AM session and/or one PM session when booking. The day costs £10, whether you do one session or two! There will be taster sessions in the following areas:
During the taster day you will have a class room session, finding out what it will be like to be a student here at Hadlow. You will then have a session on the animal unit where you will get to work with some of our animals. There will also be an opportunity to talk to some of our staff, ask questions about what it’s like to be a student at Hadlow.
During the 3 hour session you will have-a-go at handling calves at our working dairy at Blackmans Farm. Experience what our students do on a daily basis and learn what will be expected from you as an Agriculture student whilst studying at Hadlow College. You will also gather information on what units the course has to offer and what career opportunities this will present after the course.
In this session you will learn the basics of tractor driving and experience what it is like to be an engineering student. Have a look around our workshop and see some of the projects that the current LBT students are working on. You will also have a go at welding using oxy-acetylene in our own welding workshop located on the main college campus. Learn what skills our engineering students develop whilst at college and also what careers are available after the course.
During the taster day you will have an introduction to a classroom lesson on a theory subject such as feeding and a practical lecture on a subject such as grooming. You will also get further hands on experience assisting with the care of the horses.
During the horticulture taster day, you will have the chance to do some Plant Propagation, Seed Collecting & Pruning. These are essential skills which are developed through your time with us and are all required for many sectors of the industry.
If you like being creative and love flowers, Floristry could be just the perfect course and career for you. Come and discover a taster with our half day workshop where you will make two designs and get to experience what it feels like to enjoy being creative with like -minded people. You will be tutored by expert Lecturers and be able to take your creations home.
Come along for a Hatchery tour and information on the courses. Then electro fishing the river.
During the session you will spend some of the time carrying out habitat management activities, undertaking aquatic invertebrate surveys and possibly making a bird box or something similar.
Forestry and Arboriculture (all day session)
You will be able to do both practical and academic activities centered around tree management. Weather permitted you will have the opportunity to experience elements of climbing, surveying and use and maintenance of specialist equipment. You will also make a tool for measuring the height of trees.
