Our Animal Management unit has recently welcomed a new animal to the Hadlow College family, an Asian Short Clawed Otter called Borneo. To celebrate his arrival we’ve put together a fact file all about Borneo and his species…
Name: Borneo
Age: 3 Years Old
Species: Asian Short Clawed Otter
Weight: Around 3kg
Previous Home: Knockhatch Adventure Park
Diet: Otters thrive on a diet consisting of shellfish, fish, insects, vegetation and a very small amount of meat.
Fun Facts:
- They are the smallest species of otter, measuring up to two feet (61 centimetres) long.
- Hadlow College holds a dangerous wild animal’s license for them because they are a category 1 animal.
- Their tails are long giving them propulsion when swimming and steering and balance when standing upright on land. Unlike other otters, the Asian short-clawed otter has feet which are only partly webbed which gives them more dextrous paws.
- Although Otters are thought of as water dwelling the Asian Short Clawed Otter is mainly terrestrial.
- They can live for up to 16 years.
