Animal Management Study Trip to Colchester Zoo

Posted on 19th December 2013 in Animal Management, HE News, Higher Education

32 Animal Management students recently enjoyed a study trip to Colchester Zoo.

The group included students studying towards the Animal Nutrition module on the BSc (Hons) Animal Management and the BSc (Hons) Applied Behaviour Science and Welfare degree programmes.  This is an optional module for the Applied Behaviour Science degree programme and compulsory for the Animal Management programme.

Whilst at the Zoo, the students attended a nutrition workshop which included a talk from one of the Zoo Keepers.  Following the workshop they had a practical session making feeding enrichment devices for the Chimpanzees, after which, the feeding devices were put into the enclosure; the students then observed the behaviour of the Chimpanzees.

It was an excellent opportunity for the students to apply the practical application of theory learnt in lessons, as well as learning about industry specific feeding techniques and problems with zoo nutrition management.
