Another successful South of England Show
We have enjoyed another successful South of England Show. Our main stand, run by our Agriculture department and a committed team of Agricultural Engineering students, was well attended by visitors with course enquiries. The display of tractors including a restored vintage Massey Ferguson 135 tractor and a restored Ford Devon Engine drew in the crowds too. Volunteers also enjoyed our Digger Challenge, supplied by Coppard (www.coppard.co.uk), where the challenge was to place a metal pin into a tube, and also stacking tyres.
Our dairy herd performed well in the Holstein Classes, as usual with the following results:
Incalf Heifer 5th Seakin Lavanguard Melly
Dry Cow 2nd Hadlow Baxter Avril
Heifer inmilk 4th Hadlow Caliber Joy
2nd Calver 4th Reymerr Denise 3
11000kg Cow 2nd Hadlow Baxter Avril
Homebred Cow 3rd Hadlow Baxter Avril
Milk Recorded 1st Hadlow Baxter Avril
Reserve Super Dairy Cow Hadlow Baxter Avril
On Saturday’s Livestock Parade our Dairy Herd Manager Mike Deakins was presented with the Richard Dean Rose Bowl which is awarded to the stockman who has contributed the most to the show and for his work with our students.
Our Lleyn sheep owned by one of our Agriculture lectures, but on loan to the College were shown by Liam Tovey and Chris Lyle, both Extended Diploma in Agriculture students. (Liam is doing the sheep option) and both novices, showing for the first time. In spite of being nervous turning out in front of a large crowd for their first attempt at showing sheep, both did well. The College achieved a 3rd in the shearling ram class a 4th and 6th in the shearling ewe and a 3rd in the group of 3 class, all very strong classes with some very good sheep forward.
Our Agriculture students also enjoyed participating in the daily ‘Farming throughout the years’ parade, organised by South Eastern Vintage Agricultural Club (www.sevac.co.uk), which took place in the main ring, driving a variety of tractors and machines, aging from Vintage to Modern.
The South of England Show is the biggest agricultural show in Sussex. Our next big show is the Kent Show 10th, 11th & 12th July at the Detling Showground, come and visit us at stand number 37!
