Forestry and Arboriculture students get a bird’s eye view

Posted on 18th June 2015 in Horticulture

Our Forestry and Arboriculture students recently had great fun dismantling a very large tree on the Hadlow Campus using a crane.

For the morning, students observed Andy Bellhouse; our current external short course trainer for Forestry and Arboriculture certificates, dismantling a scots pine.  Andy instructed students in accessing the tree from the crane jib, securing themselves in the tree [canopy] and safely descending from the tree.

After lunch, with the tree now in sections on the ground, the students under strict supervision, were given the experience of going up 45m [150ft] – this not only bolstered their confidence with heights, it reinforced their understanding of safe procedures and effective use of climbing and lowering equipment, and of course gave them a bird’s eye view of the college and surrounding country side!
