Greenkeeping Apprenticeships Winter Work Schedule
This week marks the first day of Spring and officially the end of Winter. The Winter period is the main training season for greenkeepers and ground staff throughout the country.
Through our ABC Department we run 2 Greenkeeping Apprenticeships, Level 2 (Intermediate) and Level 3 (Advanced) Diploma in Work-Based Horticulture (Greenkeeping or Groundsmanship).
Learners on the Apprenticeships are Industry based and their learning is carried out in their own workplace. Throughout the summer they are at their busiest, working hard within their workplace, maintaining their own grounds, whilst our assessors carry out their observations.
The winter months are therefore, quieter, so as part of the learners’ continuous development, our assessors arrange various activities and trips, providing opportunities to talk with other industry experts, share good practice and keep up with industry standards.
Reflecting over the winter period we have seen fantastic support from the turf industry, in partnership and working alongside Hadlow College. A few highlights have included visits and trips to various golf clubs throughout Kent. Technical presentations and talks from Hadlow Lecturers on topics including: Turfgrass nutrition, water and soil science.
The last session involved learner presentations on their winter work schedules. This was a great end to the season, not only was it very thought provoking for the learners, but it also created a great deal of discussion and debate!
