Thousands Attend Hadlow College Lambing Weekend for Ewe-nique Opportunity to Welcome in the Spring

This year’s Lambing Weekend, our flagship event heralding the start of Spring, saw us welcome 13,000 visitors to our site at Faulkner’s Farm on the 11th and 12th March. Running for 25 years now, the event continues to expand, with this year featuring more exciting family activities and food stalls showcasing the best of our local produce than ever before. A change in layout also meant easier access around the site for visitors – from whom feedback was hugely positive – and newly implemented traffic control measures were successful in minimising any congestion around the site.

Our 500 ewes, a mixture of Suffolk crosses, mules, Kent halfbreds and Charollais, relished their time in the spotlight and although we had no births on the Saturday, a pair of healthy twins were born on Sunday lunchtime. A total of 950 lambs are expected this season, based on our scanning results.

New to this year’s event were hovercraft rides and zorbing – which saw a rather surprising amount of visitors willing to throw themselves around inside a giant human hamster ball. With a host of other activities, including a climbing wall, tractor trailer rides and tours of our Animal Management Unit, plus local craftspeople and delicious food & drink in the Produced in Kent marquee, there was something for all the family.

Paul Hannan, Group Principal and CEO of the Hadlow Group, said: “As always, the success of the event hinged on the fantastic work of our staff and of course our students, who assisted in the lambing buildings, gave talks and tours in our world-class Animal Management centre and paddocks, demonstrated vintage restored machinery, supervised the sporting activities and ensured that visitors had a great weekend. The event is always a superb opportunity to showcase our talented students and the experience they get on a fully-commercial farm and horticultural facility.”

Mark Lumsdon-Taylor, Deputy Group Principal and Deputy CEO added: “We’re constantly adapting the event to improve the visitor experience and have had some fantastic feedback from attendees this year. The event is bigger, bolder and better with every year – we look forward to expanding again for 2018.”

The below comments are just a selection of the positive feedback we received from visitors:

"Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who organised the Hadlow Lambing weekend. I have taken my young daughter for the past 3 years and we have always had an enjoyable experience. We always enjoy going into the college to see the reptiles and the activities too - and noticed this year there were some more options. We took the opportunity to ride the hovercraft and both really enjoyed it! What a great idea! Thank you again. Feel so fortunate to have such a lovely annual event locally."  -  Kristen & Charlotte, Tonbridge

“I had a really fun day and went on a hovercraft and up the massive climbing wall. I want to go to school there when I’m older” – Harry, aged 8
