La Chaire: The Story of Jersey’s Lost Garden

Posted on 17th November 2014 in Horticulture

Hadlow College lecturer Stephen Harmer has published his first book – La Chaire: The Story of Jersey's Lost Garden.

Taken from his MA dissertation in Garden History, which Stephen completed in June of this year, the book explores the human story of the two contrasting characters – Samuel Curtis and Charles Fletcher – who were responsible for the creation and development of La Chaire from 1841 through to the twentieth century.

As well as lecturing at Hadlow College, Stephen writes for the Garden Design Journal and works for the BBC and Radio Kent at the Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows. Stephen also teaches garden history for the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley.

Stephen gave his first Radio interview about the book on BBC Radio Kent - Sunday Gardening on 16th November.

The book is on sale in Waterstones, St Helier, from Easter, as well as in Broadview Garden Centre, Amazon, and outlets all over Jersey.
