Ram Management Workshop

Posted on 18th September 2014 in Agriculture, Events

On 17th September Hadlow College together with Eblex and NSA held a very informative Ram Management Workshop with a focus on ‘Fit For Purpose Breeding Rams’

The workshop included ram management prior to the mating season, the importance of ram productivity and feeding options for breeding rams.  Independent sheep consultant, Catherine Nakielny outlined the importance of ‘fit for purpose’ breeding rams, including a demonstration on how to carry out a physical examination of the ram to ensure he is suitable for breeding.  Sion Parry, Signet Breeding Consultant, explained how to use and understand Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs).  Nerys Wright, EBLEX Assistant Regional Manager, talked about common causes of ram MOT failures from research in English breeding rams.  There was a good turnout, including a number of our Agriculture students attending the evening.

Earlier on in the day Marie Prebble, one of the NSA Young Ambassadors gave a talk all of our new Agriculture and Agricultural Machinery students about how she got started in the industry, including starting her own business.  It was a really great motivational talk with a number of students wanting to chat to her afterwards.
