RHS Chelsea Floristry College of the Year 2015

Posted on 14th May 2015 in Floristry, Events

Our Level 5 Floristry students are busy creating their entries for the RHS Chelsea Floristry College of the year 2015 competition, which will take place at this year’s Chelsea Flower show.

This competition is a new initiative from the RHS giving Colleges an opportunity to showcase their students floral design skills.

Our students have been selected to enter this competition after winning Gold and Best in Show, and College of the year at Hampton Court 2014, competing against ten other colleges in the South East.

Hadlow Floristry students will now compete at Chelsea against Reaseheath College who won best in Show and college of the year at Tatton Park.

The theme this year is “Mad Hatter’s Tea Party” to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of “Alice in Wonderland. “

The students will be judged on 3 set floristry designs:

• Teapot
• Cake
• Chair

Designs need to be assembled to the highest standard of technical expertise and all fresh materials used have been selected for longevity and quality in order to look their best for the duration of the show – an extra challenge!

Some inspiration for the techniques being used came from a study tour to a European Floral exhibit in Belgium last December, which has resulted in the use of layered folded Cordyline leaves for the teapot.

Another source of inspiration came from a student floral cake competition, organised by a level 3 group, in which a chocolate torte was created, this has formed the basis for the Chelsea cake this year.

The design work will be placed into a woodland setting which will re-create the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.

This will be a great finale for what has been two years of study for the level 5 students; Caroline Miller, Sarah Bateup, Lindsey Ward and Hillary Daniels. The Level 5 Master Diploma in Professional Floristry is the highest British Floristry qualification and this fantastic initiative by the RHS will give them an opportunity to showcase their floristry skills at this prestigious Flower Show.
