Tonbridge Schoolgirl Pips the Competition with Winning Label Design

Posted on 28th June 2017 in Horticulture, Events

A pupil at Weald of Kent Grammar School for Girls has been announced as the winner of Hadlow College’s Pip-to-Plate label design competition.

Lucy O’ Donnell, 14, submitted her design to the competition, announced to tie-in with Hadlow’s annual Pip-to-Plate schools event, which asked pupils to design a new label for bottles of the College’s apple juice.

Lucy will see her winning design printed on hundreds of bottles of the juice, which is produced from a blend of selected apple cultivars from the College orchards and sold in the Hadlow Farm Shop. Her design - which was up against entries submitted by four local schools, across years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 13 - was unanimously praised by judges for demonstrating an excellent understanding of the Hadlow brand identity, with the delicacy of the watercolour technique echoing a home-grown, natural product. She also won a hamper of Kentish food and drink from the Hadlow farm shop.

Lucy said: “I love product design and food & drink, so this was the perfect competition for me. I’m so excited to have won. We recently had to do psychometric tests to determine our ideal careers and my result suggested I should work in Marketing, so it’s really nice to see my design reproduced on this scale.”

Headmistress Maureen Johnson commented: “We’re very proud that one of our pupils was selected as the winner of this competition. We hope that Lucy is going to go on to great things with her design skills. “

About Pip to Plate

Hadlow College’s fifth annual Pip-To-Plate event, held at its BIFGA/Huxley Orchards on Court Lane, Hadlow, will take place on Friday 29th September, 2017. The aim of the event is to demonstrate and educate pupils about the history of apples, as well as seed science & genetics, propagation, grafting, planting, pruning, crop protection, harvesting, storage and marketing - the full journey of an apple from its origins as a pip to the final produce on the supermarket shelf.
