Our GCSE English students recently entered a creative writing competition for 11-18 year olds run by Young Writers, who run national writing competitions throughout the academic year for primary and secondary schools.
The theme this year was ‘trapped’, with the competition entitled SOS Sagas: Trapped. Students had artistic licence over the content, but were asked to focus on brevity as they wrote their own thrilling mini saga, to 100 words. First prize was a trophy, plus resources to be given to the educational establishment the winner was studying at.
Alongside the main competition, the College also ran its own competition, with a first prize of a £50 high street voucher. The theme was well-received and our students submitted some really impressive work, writing stories based on their frustration during lockdown, with some imagining being buried alive in coffins and even being an animal, caged and mistreated by man.
Rachel Smith, Lecturer in English and Maths, said: “As the calibre of the entries was so high, the judging panel chose a winner from each class, as well as an overall Hadlow Champion. We are so proud of everyone who took part and made the judging such a tough challenge for us!”
The results were as follows:
Runners-Up:
• Harvey Sharp - Level 1 Certificate in Brickwork
Hadlow Champion:
• Matthew Smith (pictured below) - Level 3 Diploma in Animal Management
Not only were these students celebrated here, but Young Writers will be publishing a selection of entries in a book, entitled Trapped - Tales Of Peril - and we’re excited to announce that 48 of our young writers have been chosen to be included...out of 16,000 entries!
