Four of our Higher Education students took part in an inter-college challenge hosted by Derby College Group and was attended by Hadlow College, Derby College and Brooksby College to demonstrate and celebrate their hard work and research skills.
Most of the students were studying degrees in Animal Care and Management, Conservation, Behaviour, and several Derby students who were studying an Equine course also took part.
The students were tasked with completing three activities including a ‘Research Bake Off’ in which students present their research in a bakery form, a 7-Minute research seminar presenting their findings in a ‘nutshell’ and the presentation their final year projects in poster form.
To determine the winners two professional zoologists were invited to judge the competition and students and staff were to vote on their favourites from each category.
The 1st prize for the research seminar, across all Colleges was awarded to Hadlow Colleges own BSc Conservation student, Jake Mackey. This was awarded both by the external expert assessors and by the student/staff assessment, leaving Jake with two prizes. The title of Jake’s project was: Can video games be a medium to learn about animal conservation: a study on ‘Monster Hunter.’
Stacey Higgs, Team Manager in Land-based Higher Education, KS4 and Apprenticeships at Derby College Group commented, “We really wanted to work and collaborate with other institutions at Higher Education to share excellent practices of research and allow students to shine after all their hard work during their students to show it doesn’t go unnoticed and can have a real impact in the world.”
She continued to mention Howard Lee, Lecturer in Sustainability at Hadlow College, explaining “The day was a great success. All students were a real credit to their college and their dedication to research and scholarly activity. Without Howard Lees’ support with this, it would not have happened for the students, so a huge credit must also go to him.”
