Hadlow college is taking part in the Hedgehog Friendly Campus Bronze Award scheme and our college team, Hadlow Hedgehogs has been taking part in this year’s Litter Pick Challenge running from 20th September – 29th November.
Along with a chance to win a free hog house and food for the Hadlow Campus, Hadlow Hedgehogs have been removing the serious hazards posed by litter to our wildlife but especially hedgehogs whose spines make them vulnerable to being trapped in litter. Unfortunately, many hedgehogs die each year because of this. All staff, students and the local community are invited to take part and all participants receive a digital certificate. It also helps achieve the Hedgehog Friendly Campus Bronze award!
As part of the Litter Pick Challenge, Hadlow Hedgehogs have held a successful Litter Pick event to raise awareness, help protect wildlife from litter hazards and place Hadlow College higher on the leader board in the Litter Pick Challenge! The event was a huge success and involved two sessions and a two-hour litter pick by 35 students from animal management, fisheries, and agriculture. In total 26kg of waste was collected, including large items such as a commercial tyre, sign, and metal pieces. Following the main event, the rubbish was sorted, and sweet wrappers and crisp packets were found to be the biggest component. The tyre has even gone to the National Centre for Reptile Welfare to be repurposed into a planter for the centre.
This event aligns perfectly with the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference that has just taken place, and the Hadlow Hedgehogs team have been working hard to reduce the impact of plastic pollution and damage to the environment.
Thank you to Hadlow Hogs for coordinating the day, South East Rivers Trust for supporting our great litter pick event, and the Fisheries and Agriculture students for participating. Well done to everyone involved!
