Fisheries

This course is designed to give students the practical and theoretical knowledge required for employment in the aquaculture, fisheries management, or wildlife sector. You will learn how to carry out population surveys whilst using equipment and machinery safely. It will develop a range of employability skills that employers in land-based industries require. A mixture of practical and theory lessons is delivered making use of the large estate available at Hadlow College which includes access to the specialist fisheries facilities. This includes Grove farm fishery, the fish farm, the River Bourne, Bourne hatchery and aquarium, enhancing the student experience and allowing them to work with current industry technology and techniques. The course is aimed at those who want to gain employment in the fisheries, aquatics, and aquaculture industries, or have a keen interest in employment within the environmental conservation and habitat management/improvement sector. This qualification should allow progression into management roles or onto a higher education qualification in aquaculture, fisheries, or wildlife conservation management. Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food production sectors globally, creating a vast range of employment opportunities. With several human practices having the potential to cause environmental impacts, the development of an environmentally sustainable knowledge and skills set is an extremely important focus for anyone wishing to progression into a land-based career. Students can access a range of additional learning support, based on need. A range of employability skills will be developed whilst on the course including practical skills, communication, fisheries specific knowledge and development of ICT skills. The course is well supported using virtual learning resources. Students will also get the opportunity to carry out a work placement at external businesses such as country parks, fisheries, fish farms and aquarium retail outlets. They will also carry out duties at the College to develop practical skills and knowledge. Duties will also be carried out maintaining the College fisheries facilities where students will develop their knowledge alongside their practical skills.
