Carpentry & Joinery

On this Level 1 Carpentry Course, learners will be taught by trade experienced, professional tutors in a well equipped, modern workshop at our Gravesend Campus. The course is a mixture of practical and theory. Students will learn how to work safely in construction, relay information, calculate quantities and communicate with others, building methods and construction technology. They will learn how to make basic woodworking joints, how to maintain and use hand tools and portable power tools. Our Study Programme includes opportunities for you to develop your English and Maths skills as required. You may be expected to complete either functional skills or GCSE qualifications as part of your course depending on your GCSE results.

Tuition Fees: 16-18 - free 19+ - £1650 Exam and Registration Fees (payable by all aged 19 and over): £120 This course may also attract additional costs, for example, kit, uniform or books, that all students will be required to pay. Please contact the College for further details.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements for our courses depend on the specific requirements of each Education Programme and an individual’s previous experience, which will all be discussed during the interview process. The following list offers a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry on to a particular level of a course.

Please note in some areas where there is a higher maths, English or science content, or where technical skills are required, the entry requirements are higher than stated below. Applicants are advised of entry requirements for individual courses at their interview and this is checked at enrolment.

Interview processes and any pre-interview tasks will vary dependent on curriculum area; this information will be shared with you once your application has been processed.

Entry Level 3 Programmes

No formal entry qualifications but subject to approval from the Curriculum area and Additional Learning Support team.
Level 1 Programmes

GCSEs grades1-2 or E to G or equivalent, including Foundation Awards and Entry Level qualifications. If you don’t have formal qualifications to meet these requirements, we will be able to assess your readiness during the admission process.
Level 2 Programmes

Minimum of 4 GCSEs grade 3 (previously D) or above including maths and English and relevant subject qualification or minimum of a full Level 1 course in chosen subject at Merit or above and English and maths at Level 1.
Level 3 Programmes

Minimum of 5 GCSEs grade 4 (previously C) or above including maths and English and relevant subject qualification or minimum of a full Level 2 course in chosen subject at Merit or above and English and maths at Level 2.
Progressing to each Level of study

On successful completion of your qualifications and having met the college behaviour and attendance expectations, you may be able to progress on to another course. If not, the college will arrange a Careers guidance meeting with you to discuss alternative options.
