Stable Management Stream: This is a two-year, full-time course consisting of a range a subject's that enable students to achieve an excellent foundation in equine studies preparing them for Higher Education or employment in various fields within the industry. The course offers students exceptional opportunity to gain hands on experience to develop their practical skills in horse husbandry. The two-year course builds skills such as yard management, working with breeding stock and organising events. Students are required, as part of this course, to undertake two external work experience placements and perform duties on the College Yard. Riding Academy Stream: This is a two-year, full-time course consisting of a range of subjects that enable students to achieve an excellent foundation in equine studies, alongside development of their riding practice, which will help in preparing them for Higher Education or employment in various fields within the industry. The course offers students exceptional opportunity to gain hands on experience to develop their practical husbandry and riding skills. The two-year course builds skills such as yard management, working with breeding stock and organising events. Students are required, as part of this course, to undertake two external work experience placements and perform duties on the College Yard.

Within the study programme students will undertake the learning of the knowledge, skills and behaviours aligned to the BHS Stage 1 Care & Ride qualification. Students who reach the appropriate BHS Stage 1 standard can undertake the assessment within the academic year. Achievement of this BHS Stage 1 qualification is subject to an additional registration, assessment and certification fee which will require self-funding by all students. Cost information will be provided nearer the time along with payment options. BHS Stage 2 learning and assessment opportunities will be undertaken in the subsequent year for our Level 3 Equine Management students.

  • What qualification will I gain?

    BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Equine Management

  • Entry Requirements

    Minimum of 4 GCSEs grades 9 - 4 or equivalent (Level 2 Diploma), which must include GCSEs in English AND Maths 9 - 4 Grade or equivalent (Level 2 Functional Skills).

    You should also have a keen interest in the subject and demonstrate a commitment to the curriculum area. Students who wish to be in the riding academy will need at least 1 years' experience of riding a horse and be able to demonstrate that they can confidently ride independently in walk, trot, and canter in a group. They need to demonstrate a sufficient level of balance and control of the horse, and pass a riding assessment at the College, prior to starting the course in September. Students who follow the stable Management option do not have riding on their timetable.

  • What progression options will I have?

    On successful completion of this Level 3 course, students' progress on to a Higher Education Foundation Degree here at the college. With the option to 'top up' to a full BSc in year 3.
    Those who directly enter the equine industry often begin roles such as competition groom, yard assistant, assistant yard manager or a junior instructor. Students have found employment in a wide range of equine establishments, including competition yards, riding schools, horse transport, veterinary practices, and retail businesses.

    Tuition Fees: 16-18 - free 19+ Advanced Learning Loan - £7150 Exam and Registration Fees (payable by all aged 19 and over): £245 This course may also attract additional costs, for example, kit, uniform or books, that all students will be required to pay.   • How will I be assessed?

    Students are assessed throughout the course using assignments, tests, practical observations, and external assessments. Students are expected to relate theory to practice in all assessments.
