Some of Hadlow’s Higher Education (HE) Animal Management students got an exclusive, behind the scenes glimpse, at one of London’s most popular tourist attractions recently.
Zoo Husbandry and Management and Applied Behaviour Science and Welfare HE students visited the Sea Life London Aquarium, home to one of Europe’s biggest collections of global marine life, which attracts over a million visitors each year to its London South-Bank location.
Students were shown the inner workings of the huge tank systems and learnt about their processes and protocols regarding nutrition, feeding, training, quarantining and transportation.
Suzie Simpson, Lecturer in Animal Management at Hadlow College, said: “A lot of people will not be aware of the crucial need for efficient communication and teamwork involved when moving a large animal out of water.
“They are clearly an incredible team and the students had a great day. One or two were definitely converted and left interested in pursuing this career so it was a valuable trip in their personal journey!”
Hadlow College’s Animal Management courses mix theory, such as learning about the structure and function of the animal body, along with practical work in a large custom-built animal management unit.
Students are involved in all aspects of husbandry and management from planning animal collections, and designing and maintaining enclosures, to day-to-day animal care within an animal collection set up as a commercial enterprise.
